I've used the VW dealer supplied oil filter on occasion....as I recall they aren't terribly expensive and it doesn't take the VW dealer long to get them in stock. Aren't the VW filters made by Mann or Mahle?

Technically, this is the correct filter. But it is like you say, CHEEP for
a reason. It is very CHEEPLY made by Champion Labs for Bosch. Champion
Labs make a lot of aftermarket names like Lee, STP, etc. I like to call
them "K-Mart/Wal Mart" filters for the bargain basement minded customer.
Good for a quick fix to get you where you want to go, but I won't use 'em on
a regular basis. One consistent problem I have noted from personal
experience and others who have used Bosch Oil Filters is there can be (but
not always) a reduction in oil pressure. That can be the death knell to an
air cooled engine, especially one that works a bit more in a heavy Westfalia
like yours. From my personal file: I had one of these total fail on an 80
Vanagon (would not pass, filter or even bypass the oil flow back into the
engine) (noticed the rapid rise of oil temperature about 3 miles down the
highway) on a very hot afternoon in the Sacramento Valley 12 years ago.
Immediately pulled over and popped a Mann unit in and everything was fine
after that. Sent it back to Bosch and yep, they said it was NFG - got my
money back.
Stick with Mann or Mahle or you'll be soooorrrryyy ;-)
