NEVER use the tubes to hold up a hatch that will not stay up on it's own! A fellow Vanagon owner nearly killed me last year when the tube slipped and the hatch with a bike rack on it came down full force on my head, knocked me to the ground, knocked my glasses off, and drew blood. I have never been hit so hard. I had a headache for a week. Think twice before you think you will save a few bucks - hatch struts are not expensive. To this day the (shall I say idiot?) Vanagon owner still has'nt replaced them, and I will not allow him to visit me until he does. Sounds harsh? Not nearly as harsh as having 100 lbs crash down on your head! So if you want to kill somebody, go right ahead, do the fool plastic tube mod. Besides, you head isn't as hard as mine. Robert 1982 Westfalia Rear hatch with no gas in struts fell from full up position and I lived to tell about it, due to Vanagon owner using plastic tubes to hold up hatch
