I have a manual tranny and we mounted the foulding type cups on the vertical flat plastic just forward of the shift lever (About 12 to 18 inches off the floor). One cup holder on each side of the shifter. I used some metal backing to help hold the screws and it's worked, no problem for about 5 years. I can send pictures if you wish.
