I would try and get all the right parts for reassembly. Some boot kits comes with everything but the 12 plates with two holes in them. I believe the lock washers are only designed for single use.

Regarding the discolouration of the outer rings (races), I asked a friend of mine who is a metal technician when I was servicing my CV's and he said that the discolouration was caused by the hardening process which is normal. Now if your ball bearings are dark, kind of blued, then he told me that was not normal and they have overheated at some time. BTW two of my CV joint bearings were dark, which were the same two CV's that had pitted races. I replaced them both although they were not showing symptoms of wear before servicing them. (I now used the old ones as a puzzle...)

Hi all.

*sigh*

Am repacking CV's. After cleaning/inspecting CV parts I found that I have only 10 metal bits (plates with 2 holes) and 20 bolts. Some washers.

My theories:

- PO/mechanic didn't install all the CV parts.

- I am loosing my mind as well as Vanagon parts.

- Neighbours took them because they didn't like the "music" I was making pounding out drive shafts.

or,

- Gremlins took them from the greezy pile of bolts etc. to add to their collection of single socks.

Bentley shows Synchro as having bolts/washers/metal pieces on front CV. Rear CV shows only bolts.

I have 4 new boot kits ready to install.

Given that my van had some or all of these metal pieces installed, can I install with bolts only?

It boggles my mind that the CV's could've been working all this time minus a few bolts/washer/metal pieces.

Is this possible?

Oh and....

All 4 CV outer rings are discolourd (sorta black/blue) 1/2 way through from inside toward out (if that makes sense) on each side. Are they heat damaged and in need of replacement?

Thanks so much for any help!

Neil.
