There is a very large difference in catalytic converters
between OEM and aftermarket.

OEM cats are more effective at their job protecting the
environment - the active ingredient is platinum, which
ain't cheap, and OEMs simply use more of it.

Secondly, they *tend* to be better constructed - they have
to last through the warranty period don't forget, which
affects the mfg's reputation.  (Will you be angrier when
your $150+ VW cat fails quickly, or the $55-$75 cat you
bought instead?)

As to whether OEM is worth the difference (e.g. cost per
month given part longevity), I won't hazard a guess.
