I've been running a Behr radiator in Ole Putt for 2 1/2 years now.  I have
no heating issues, she runs pretty dang hot in the front heater core (and so
does the rear heater core as well).  I run the stock 87c thermostat
(installed at the time of radiator replacement).  I also replaced the heater
valve at the same time, "just because". Note: I'd had the engine and auto
tranny being done at the same time, so I figured "why not" do it to "cover
the bases".

I don't remember what the original radiator was made out of.  But it was
sure heavier than the replacement.  And the original was pretty plugged up
with crud inside after almost 20 years of use.  Haven't had an overheating
problem since.

I think who ever warned you probably had other cooling issues, such as the
stuck thermostat or bad heater valve as you mention.
