Neil,

Doing your own work and scrimping on oil filters is false economy, in my opinion. If it's not a Mann/Mahle, it won't have the proper valves. Neither will a Bosch. If you do end up using a common oil filter, don't drive any long distances. Make sure you are using good oil either way, and get a good filter on there as soon as you can, especially if you don't like the clatter of collapsed lifters.

I don't have a 24 mm socket and have done about everything to a vanagon you can do but remove the dash and the gas tank. I can't think of what you would need one for. If you were to change out a power steering rack you'd need a 22mm, and a 1 1/16 or 1/18 socket to pull the steering wheel nut.
