Not only is the fan motor different, so is the harness, resistor, and control methods. With the smaller motor, the fan switch actually has the motor current going through it on low speed. The high speed turns on the relay on the fuse box. With the larger fan motor, the low speed switches the relay on the fuse panel, (same as high above) and high speed is done with a separate relay mounted above the fuse box. It is hat big white relay with the fuse link. For some reason many 90 and 91 went back to the smaller fan and control set up even with AC. The fan is a different part number than the common fan is most vanagons. I understand that VW changed the fan for vanagons that had a/c,after 1986.Interestingley, yesterday,I took a fan off a 90 w a/c and it was the same fan as my 85. Whats up? I was expecting to find tha fan updated ,for the a/c this van had. Also his fan seems to draw to much current. It almost melted a papaerclip that used to jump the temp sensor ontehn radiater. Is this normal? Thanks
