Subject: should I replace my cat before even getting an emissions test?
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"

Hi folks,

As some of you know, my engine blew a year and a half ago.

I have not had a state inspection since, because Matilda is registered in Virginia and she hasn't been there in two years. (The DMV has her on file as temporarily based in Colorado, so I was able to renew my registration without an inspection. Useful option to know about, for those of you on the road for a long time.)

I am now heading back to Virginia, though, and she'll have to get inspected right away or I can't drive her - I'll get ticketed fast with an inspection sticker that expired in 2005!

So the question is, should I assume that I'll need a new catalytic converter in order to pass my emissions test (required in northern VA), and just order a new one before I even take her in?

Or should have an emissions test first in case I don't turn out to need one?

I'm guessing the former, but perhaps having had the engine blew wouldn't necessarily trash the cat?

Joy
