Subject: Silicone tape was '85 with geysering coolant (Update)
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Greetings fellow Vanagonauts,

About the tape I used: I've seen it elsewhere, but got mine from Duluth Trading; here's a link: http://www.duluthtrading.com/search/searchresults/42042.aspx?feature=Product_1

It's neat stuff, but I would observe that cleanliness is next to godliness for this application. I cleaned up the area before applying the tape, but even so, little particles of dust got on the tape. I applied the tape in an even wrap up the exposed plastic tube, and then down the tube, and ended with a couple of turns back up and straight (about 2 and a half wraps). I kept a light tension at all times, just enough to give a firm wrap without distorting the plastic tube underneath. Even though the directions said it would fully cure in about 2 hours, I let it sit overnight. Then a test run in the desert outside of town to get the temperature up and the radiator fan running on low, an inspection, and the decision was made to continue with camping plans.

I'm thinking of entirely wrapping the hoses on the Diesel when I put it back together - - that and the use of the Evans coolant (no pressure) would put my mind at ease about re-using twenty-four year-old hoses, at least until I can fabricate something new out of metal.

And once again, thanks everyone for all the help and suggestions I received!

Gary
