I definitely recommend fusion tape (I've heard some electricians call it "rubber tape"). I had the exact same problems with my laptop AC adapter plug. I basically "rubberized" the plug and 2-3" of the cord. Not a single problem since. You can find it with the electrical tape at most building supply places that carry electrical things. The key to making it work is to stretch it as you apply it. It's really handy for all kinds of electrical repairs, and is actually completely waterproof, unlike regular vinyl electrical tape.
