Gilles,

I have an 88 Vanagon with the plastic chrome trim in the window moldings. I took them all out several months back and haven't (so far) had any problems. I did have some minor leakage around the fron window before I removed the trim, and still do, but I can't say that it's from not having the trim. If I had it to do again, I'd try just painting the trim flat black.
