If you are using a unidirectional tread for a spare, it doesn't really matter whether it is going forward or backward. The tire won't explode or disintegrate, the tread pattern just won't evacuate water quite as efficiently backward as forward.

I would mount it as a passenger spare since that is the side where most flats occur from pointy bits picked up near the curb.
