My only anecdotal brighter tail-light story is from a '76 Bug I had with the "elephants foot" Tail lights. I installed halogen back-up lights - which worked great, but over time started to melt the plastic inside of the taillight. I was amazed since I don't spend that much time backing up. Anyway, whenever upgrading to a higher wattage bulb, it is good practice to periodically check the hoursing to make sure nothing funny is going on.
