Subject: Clutch housing rebuild questions (searched archicve) + small
              report
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Hi all.

Recently posted about "click" when depressing clutch pedal. Turns out the cos (clutch lever) was rubbing on slave cly. mounting bracet. The groove on cos and bracket ~ 1mm deep. My theory: Arm was pushing circular opening of slave bracket against trans. housing. I will check clutch springs for probs though.

Release shaft has slight fore/aft play in DS bearing and what I can see on shaft at this point shows some wear. So.... I will install new rel. shaft, clutch lever and bushings. Tranny seal ok, but metal TOB tube shows slight wear from "normal" TOB movement.

Problems/questions:

Pivot bolt (secures release shaft) is stripped. What is best method to repair? Tap and install larger bolt? Heli-coil? JB it in? (it seems it would bear little if any load)

Should I replace TOB tube if slightly worn?

Is there a way to make sure new clutch lever doesn't rub against slave brackt?

Is it worth installing a HD clutch while I'm in there? (Sachs looks ok, but have yet to measure disk wear) I understand (thanks Roger) that metal bearing needed for that application.

Thanks so much for any help,

Neil Nicholson. 1981 Air Cooled Westfalia.
