Yes, the reference to the ash tray vent is an indicator that he was referring so some setup other than VintageAir's. Their deluxe set-up uses an evaporator that also includes all the baffling for both heating and cooling and fits in the dash.

Any list member actually installed a VintageAir system?

It replaces the front ashtray with a vent as described. I had problems with it after installation which I now consider solved. The problems involved not using enough oil with the refrigerant and the failure of the control valve. I have since converted to R134, had the valve replaced, had the right amount of oil added, and all is well. The front vent is a great addition to the little cool air that makes it up from the back vents. The original compressor (Subaru) is still plugging along and keeping me cool. I did get phone advice from Vintage Air and I would advise checking with them since they helped diagnose my problems and seemed very knowledgeable.

I think this is the place:

http://www.vintageair.com/

I too would love to hear from anyone who has worked with them on a Vanagon project.
