On a very hot day or on a warm day when you park with the fridge side in the sun, the fan will run without the engine running and yes it will run a weak battery or a weak charging system down to the point that will strand you. While I don't doubt the fridge is SUPPOSED TO stop running on battery when the engine is off, mine does not. Ask me how I know...
