I've always used Moly grease, same stuff I use on CVs. I use it anywhere heat is an issue. I don't recall a big difference between each end of the needle bearing, but I don't have a loose one to check. I would think if one end of the case has a larger inside diameter, then this should face the clutch. The beefier end going toward the crank, making it easier to remove the old one... but I could be wrong. ;-\
