If you turn the heat source off under the percolating pot, the grounds will drop to the bottom in "time". Dropping that temp a few degrees, whether adding water or egg shells, creates that change immediately, stops the boiling/percing process, and when you're as basically impatient as coffee drinkers are, first thing in the AM, that's a very important feature. ;>)
