Let me know what you find out. I was trying to do the same thing but found some very odd results. I would have to dig up my notes, but when I was testing with my VOM, it looked to me like VW did not follow either way.

If I remember correctly, it looked like they did not ground it through the switch, but used +12V and -12V to have a floating ground.

I tried hooking up the kit I had - an Autoloc - but it did not work. I have not yet had the time to troubleshoot it.
