Subject: vanagon engine conversions vs rebuilt 1.9 waterboxer
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1"

I need to get a rebuilt engine for my 1984 westy watercooled. I have been reading about Tiico, 1.9 waterboxer rebuilds and jetta conversions.

I am reluctant to consider the rebuilt waterboxer due to the inherent issues (head gaskets, etc) that come with the engine design but like to cost (less than 3k installed).

I have heard some negatives about the Tiico in terms of parts availability.

An experienced vw mechanic who specializes in vw restorations is selling vw jetta rebuilt engines (90-92) for around 5k installed.

Has anyone had experiences with the jetta in a vanagon in terms of durability, perfomance, etc?

Any input appreciated.

Thanks
