Tom,

You only have to do this once. Remove the nut and disassemble the mirror from the base. Now you have two choices, either cut a thin (very thin!) rubber washer from some sheet material available at your local hardware store, or use heavy grit sandpaper to roughen up the ball joint contact surfaces (roughening is not as pretty). Reassemble and tighten to the point that it is fairly stiff to move.

Overtightening the nut will result in two separate pieces that can't be reassembled. I know, I've done it :( (snap)
