That's because they're off by quite a bit... the DK is tall, but not that tall. By my math, the DK
will give about 79kmh/50mph @ 2500rpm, compared with the DX at 74km/h (with 196/75r14
tires). The difference is about 7% between the two trannies in top gear. (3.89 vs 4.18 final
ratio in top gear for DK vs DX). Perhaps his tach calibration is off?
As for the MPG, it sounds possible, especially with a lighter pass. van with less drag. My
overall average for my Westy 1.6TD & DX, normally driven quite well loaded, and often at
EGT limited speed (which could be 70mph on flat ground), has been 31mpg imperial or
26mpg US.
I wouldn't be looking at a DX over a DK for the top end gearing, but for the extra ratio, and
the ultra low 1st gear. But even at that, I'd only recommend the 5 speed if you do offroading
and lots of hills. Otherwise, the 4 speed is much nicer and easier to drive. I'm getting used to
my DX, but two things could make it better - easier 1st gear entry (I'm thinking of removing
the 'side-thrust spring' as it seems redundant), and a lower reverse gear. With such a low
1st, the tall R gear becomes noticeable in adverse conditions. I think a syncro will solve most
of those problems though... ;-)
