Thanks to all who responded. I was able to remove it using the highly recommended "bilateral gentle leverage method" and the needle did NOT go flying, and did NOT break, but I also did NOT note the position of the needle beforehand (against the peg, obviously) so I'll have to look for the little VDO mark mentioned by someone in his response, or else live with a wildly inaccurate speedo reading.

The problem, as far as I was able to determine, is that the shaft on the main odo (not the reset shaft) slipped out of its mooring on the right, permitting the pinion gear to slip to the left off the worm gear and therefore not be able to be turned by the worm gear.

I jiggled the right end of the shaft into its resting place and bent a little tab of sheetmetal to hold the pinion in place on the left and used one of the corner screws to hold it in position. Testing with a square drive tip in an electric drill shows that it now works (he said, confidently) and I will reinstall and verify, if I can find all the attaching parts I removed when I took it out.
