remember the 80's volvo wagons that had the metal bar in the rear side windows that would hold the rear shoulderbelts?

i was looking thru a few old pics of european spec vanagons... i noticed in a few of the passenger models, that also had rear "jailbars" that some had these side jailbars too... they mount to the D pillar, go horizontal over the rear side glass, and then bend down and mount to the area under the rear side windows where the rear seatback is.. at the bend, there is a shoulderbelt tether.. seems these have a dual purpose..to protect the rear side glass behind the rear seat, and to mount the shoulderbelt to. i have seen these in a few different pictures.. has anyone seen them before or know of a part number?

Chris

Seen them? Sure have...I have a set in my van for the rear seat belts. They weren't just European spec...All Aust.spec vans/Caravelles had them too except for the panel vans.

They are there for the rear seat belts only...the fact that they afford some protection to the side windows is just a bonus but they do work very well for that purpose. I have had amps and front-of-house speakers saved from potentially breaking the side glass a number of times thanks to the bars. They are also useful to attach straps or rope to in order to secure a loose load in the back.

They would not be difficult to fabricate...the round bar is approx 25mm dia (from memory), bent to shape and the ends flattened to affix the bolts through into the sides of the van. An anchor point for the seat belt is welded to the bar (and probably goes through it) at the bend as Chris describes above.

Anyway, I will have the van with me tomorrow so if anybody is interested, I can take some close-up pics and email them along with bar size etc...I doubt they have a part no on them however I look closely just in case...

I also know where I think I can get a set from an old 1.9L Caravelle if anybody reeeeeeeally has to have some...
