When re-assembling my 1.9 after a complete tear-down / rebuild, I assembled the rods to the crankshaft, the crankshaft into the case, then the completely assembled pistons to the rods, then the cylinders over the pistons. Getting the rings compressed only involved using a side-clamp type ring compressor. This kind easily separates to be pulled out around the con rod, under the lower edge of the cylinder. Most motorcycles and snowmobiles need this kind of compressor, because the rod needs to be on the crankshaft before the piston goes on the rod.

I am back working on my waterboxers. Just like to know has anyone successfully replaced the rings without having to go the cumbersome route of removing the pistons from the con-rod and slipping the cylinder liners in and reinstalling. I read somwhere that using the 2.0 litre coke bottle plastic label could provide sufficient compression to slip the liner in without removing the pistons.

Any one tried above succesfully ?

Terry
