yes, it can be done to a new tank.. and yes it can be done for quite less than $550.. and yes the whole reason im doing this is so that the stock tank can be mounted in the stock way, after the mod. no need to add any extra brackets or mounts.. and yes there will be room on the pass side for the heater hoses, PS lines, and shift linkage.. the only void im filling up is that which was used by the aircooled heater duct..
