Joe, I've reupholstered other vehicles. ) The problems I ran into are the machine... needs to be heavy duty... today's mending sewing machines just won't leave a stitch that holds up. The material is extra thick... and that is hard to run through a non-professional machine. 2) most upholstery shops now order ready made seat covers, and fit them to your particular vehicle. Nip here, tuck there, and replacing foam when necessary or where you tell them you want it. 3) seams are really hard to do so that they have that "professional look". If money is an issue, I'd suggest finding a shop that can order ready made covers that you like. If money isn't a consideration, then go for the experiment and try it yourself! Madeline

Because this fabric is NLA, I've been looking for an excuse to reupholster. I really wanted to do the brown VW "Mexico Plaid" from the late Bay Windows, but that stuff is some kind of expensive through GoWesty and BusDepot.

With my three year-old and two week-old having chosen the Vanagon over the Passat Wagon as their preferred mode of transportation, I had an idea that maybe I'd use indoor/outdoor furniture upholstery if I can find a cool plaid pattern (spill resistant, durable).

Does anybody have experience with reupholstering, and know of the costs and possible pitfalls?

Or, does anybody have some good tan VW corduroy lying around?

Thanks, Joe T.
