Subject: Continued noisy fuel pump woes - '85 Westy
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Well I'm getting pretty tired of spraying money at this with no results. It is, however, possible that I am just nuts.

I posted a while back that the fuel pump on my '85 Westy seemed loud - it seems like I really shouldn't even be able to hear it (?). At any rate, it sounded bad to me when I bought the car last spring so I replaced it with a brand new Bosch pump from Bus Depot. There was no change in the noise (kind of an irregular hum/buzz, sometimes absent upon start up but always present within 3 or 4 minutes). 2 local VW mechanics told me not to worry about it, "they all do that".

The next suspect was crud in the tank and as the tank needed resealing anyway I had it pulled and cleaned and replaced the grommets and sending unit (which incidntally did NOT make my gas gauge any more accurate). I STILL have the noise. I took it to yet another mechanic who also basically concluded that with a new pump (and new filter) and a recently cleaned tank there is nothing to worry about no matter what it sounds like (he didn't really think it was that loud, which baffles me).

Any advice? The only other thing I can think of is to install a kick-ass stereo and keep it cranked so I never hear the damn pump again! (current stereo is busted so I hear everything). Short of that, would anyone like to recommend a Seattle-area Vanagon guru who could take a quick listen and tell me if it sounds normal enough? (off line is ok if you don't want to muddy the list with shop names).

Thanks as always, Curt tele2222@yahoo.com
