The Labor Day trip to the C&O Canal went so well that we took a week and drove the Westy up I-81 to the St. Lawrence River and the 1000 Islands. Lovely trip and the van performed admirably. My bravest moment was a 15.15 gallon refill driven with a broken odometer, so I had no idea of the distance or fuel mileage I was getting. Camped out 6 of the 8 nights and generally behaved like tourists.

I spotted a few Vanagons along the way; notably a white syncro at Hersheypark, an aircooled Adventurewagen for sale in Burlington, Vermont (decent body with recent orange and white paint, interior looks like it was removed but for the front seats; call Better Bus and Bug on S. Champlain Street), and several other Westies in that town. I nearly despaired of seeing another one in use camping until the last night on Mt. Greylock in Massachusetts, where we landed next to a maroon one with nice mods; Shadyboy awning, Fiamma rack and three-window canvas.

We can’t go camping this weekend because the house without wheels needs some work, and it sounds like the radiator fan is running constantly on the van, so I have to check that.

Stephen
