I disagree. Long after the aircooled models were ended, VW offered an auxiliary heater that mounted under the center of the van, in both diesel and gasoline. This heater used that same fuel tank tunnel to duct hot air to the front heater vents. VW cleverly came up with a lasting design, anticipating the need for the tunnel for the entire vehicle production life. Page 82.12 of the Bentley shows this heater and it's large diameter duct pipe that goes up to the front.
