If fuel delivery is good and the only problem is noise, just isolate the
pump better.
If I remember correctly, the pump is held in a metal bracket and mounted to
another bracket with rubber isolators in between.
Get creative- see if you can add some more rubber somewhere between the pump
and van body.
On another note- I don't know every detail of your quest to quite the pump,
but I do know that you can troubleshoot your problem by running a hose
directly from the pump inlet to a can of fuel. I know you said you had tank
work performed but you can't be sure it was done right.
Run the pump and see if it is still noisy. At least that way you know if
it's the pump or the tank/lines/vents.
Before anyone cries foul, don't attempt this unless you are smart enough to
safely handle fuel in this manner.

Well I'm getting pretty tired of spraying money at
this with no results. It is, however, possible that I
am just nuts.
I posted a while back that the fuel pump on my '85
Westy seemed loud - it seems like I really shouldn't
even be able to hear it (?). At any rate, it sounded
bad to me when I bought the car last spring so I
replaced it with a brand new Bosch pump from Bus
Depot. There was no change in the noise (kind of an
irregular hum/buzz, sometimes absent upon start up but
always present within 3 or 4 minutes). 2 local VW
mechanics told me not to worry about it, "they all do
that".
The next suspect was crud in the tank and as the tank
needed resealing anyway I had it pulled and cleaned
and replaced the grommets and sending unit (which
incidntally did NOT make my gas gauge any more
accurate). I STILL have the noise. I took it to yet
another mechanic who also basically concluded that
with a new pump (and new filter) and a recently
cleaned tank there is nothing to worry about no matter
what it sounds like (he didn't really think it was
that loud, which baffles me).
Any advice? The only other thing I can think of is to
install a kick-ass stereo and keep it cranked so I
never hear the damn pump again! (current stereo is
busted so I hear everything). Short of that, would
anyone like to recommend a Seattle-area Vanagon guru
who could take a quick listen and tell me if it sounds
normal enough? (off line is ok if you don't want to
muddy the list with shop names).
Thanks as always,
Curt
