FWIW, my old '84 Vanagon Westy did this, and despite throwing lots of time and money at the problem, never did get it to go away-except by selling it. Don't know if my "new" '84 does it yet, because at the moment it has no engine. I pulled the seized 1.9 out of it Sunday, and it is definitely locked up solid! I went out Sunday morning just to "tinker with it a bit", 2 hours later I had the engine on the ground. Not exactly a text book pull. Even though I KNEW this, I forgot that unlike a bay, you must support the transmission! Quick trip to Home Depot and I got a piece of the angle iron with holes/slots (like you use to hang garage doors with) and fabricated a support bar for the trans. Also got the engine compartment spotlessly clean. Now I need to swap the required pieces from the 1.9 to the 2.1, waiting on all the stuff I just ordered from Bus Depot last Friday to get started-I almost don't want to go to JBB this weekend, I wanna get this Vanagon going again-but I (we) will be there.
