Anyway, this sounds to me like the classic Hall sender failure.... When mine was going, it would drop out like this up to ~2000 rpm, then be fine above, but when the tach drops dead and the motor cuts out, look carefully at the Hall sender.

Don't let them tell you to buy a new distributor. You can get the Hall sender. The Bus Depot, for example, now lists them: http://busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=052998065
