Hi Chris, I'm no expert but I believe it makes a difference whether your van is 2WD or 4WD (syncro). Syncro instructions are on the syncro yahoo group site at:

IIRC my sycnro tranny was removed white the van was on an overhead lift (but you cuold likely do the same from a pit) via a tranmission jack supported from the bottom. The engine came out next, supported from the top by a crossbar across the engine compartment and slowly lowered.

P.S. I don't think you're asking this but in case you are... I doubt the engine can be removed through the engine cover; it must be removed downward.
