Troubleshooting from long distance is always difficult. The fact that he had experienced hard starting prior to the trip only confused things in my mind. I've had 2 different 1.9 ECUs fail and when they did it was like someone threw the switch from on to off. There were no intermittant symptoms. Luckily, when one failed 1,000 miles from home, I had a spare under the seat.
