Doing the rust removal thing and I've found a rusty spot back by the ECU mount area on the floor. I had a rivet come loose on that side's side panel and am wondering if nasties got in through a less than watertight pop rivet?

Anyway, I'm more concerned about permanent removal of these panels. I've gotten them all off and curious as to why VW decided the Vanagon had to have them in the first place? The other question revolves around if I do not replace them on the 90GL, then how best to fill in the holes so they never leak again?

I was thinking about using a thickened Gougeon Bros. epoxy to fill the gaps and tint the resin to the color of the van. I'm not so much worried about making it really sanitary at this point, but more about a permanent seal. Welding is not an option here. I'd sell the panels and bumpers, but most folks probably would be unhappy with what they got. A crack here and there would take some minor fixing.
