Subject:      Eng. off/cold; brake pedal goes to floor. Eng. on/pump pedal;
              pedal height ok.

Hi all.

Ok. So I finished working on my rear brakes. Thanks in part to my questions answered on WetWesties and Diesel Vanagon re: bleeding brakes. But I still have a nagging brake symptom.

Here's what I've done.

Replaced master cylinder, shoes+hardware, drums, cylinders and one steel brake line (RR) on rears. Adjusted them, bled them (a few times different ways). But.....

Cold in the morning engine off; brake pedal is easy to push to floor. Pumping doesnt' seem to bring up pedal height. After starting, and a couple pumps, pedal height is ok. It stays ok as I drive and brakes work ok. If it sits for a long time (hours?) pedal goes to floor yada yada same sad story.

Shoes are adjusted. There are no leaks

Any other listers with brakes that function, but have same symptom? Any ideas as to why?

It's just "nagging" at me as it doesn't seem normal. Pretty sure brakes weren't like that before.

Thanks for any opinions/help,

Neil Nicholson. 1981 Air Cooled Westfalia.
