Well, backfiring is usually either raw fuel in the exhaust system or bad spark timing, but your initial post makes it sound like you filled up with water-laden gasoline. I have had symptoms similar to Jarrett's three times, in three different Vanagons, when filling up at three different 76 stations in NW Washington. I figure they're allergic to the stuff, and won't buy it anymore at any price.
