it, i guess it makes sense to learn on automatic first.
but, if you want to know, i got my licence in 1998 for about 1100USD, or
2000 deutsche mark. this included thirty hours of driving with a teacher who
has a second set of pedals. of these three are on the autobahn, five
highway, two at night and the rest in town. Additionally roughly twenty
hours of theory, which includes driving rules, suggestion and basic
mechanics. failing a driving test costs you roughly 300usd.
the cost is considered by most parents as part of the educatioal costs of a
child.  (unfortunately, we do not have tuition fees at university)
