Thanks, all. Good info. I'm going to see what my mechanic's quote is before I scratch out enoughtime for this. Local, very good parts distributor has a Cardone rebuit long rack for $280. A list member has a good condition used rack for $100. I'm going with rebuilt.

I replaced my '85's power steering rack in my driveway using a jack and jackstands. As I recall, it took me 3 or 4 hours with much of the time spent on opening the connector on the U-joint where it goes over the splined input shaft for the rack. I ended up using a railroad spike as a wedge which really worked great.

I was putting on new outer tierod ends so I just used a pickle fork type separator on them.
