Subject: Suddenly, no oil pressure. Disaster??
Content-Type: text/plain; charset=iso-8859-1

Either that, or a bad switch. The light stays on. Cant tell if I really have oil pressure,or not. This began immediately after replacing two pushrod tubes with adjustable pushrod tubes.I had to remove the rocker arm to do this. The switch was exposed ,with the tin removed. This, for a week while I finally got around to doing the job.

When I put everything back together, and added new oil/filter, the light would not go off. I removed the oil pressure relief valve, and it looks fine. I hooked a multi meter up to the lead from the oil pressure switch, and the other meter to ground. When I ran the engine, the meter showed continuity. It would not go to an open circut. Looks like the switch is the problem.

Now, here is the issue.I am afraid to remove the oil pressure sending switch.I fear the threads will come out with the switch. What would I do then??You say this will only happen if the switch is overtightened, right? Well, I have never touched that switch since I have owned the vanagon. I say all this , because it happened to me once before in a vanagon. My parts van. I removed the oil pressure sender, and the threads came out with the switch. What a mess.Never heard of it happening before? I havent. Not on this list. What kind of odds would I loose to, if the threads come out with this second switch, when I remove it? 0 for 2, I would be . This is never supposed to happen to begin with.

Is there a second oil port I can use to get pressure readings from and add a new switch ?This is a 1.9. Can I use some other area of the engine to screw in a new switch? I would rather leave this switch alone. Other than my last experience, I dont have any particular reason to believe it will be a problem to replace. If the threads come out, disaster!!! I tried helicoil ,but it failed. The helicoil is a M10 w/1.0 TP .Difficult to find, and expensive($50). I drilled the remaining threads out,but fragment of aluminum surley got inside the engine. I finally got a brass pipe and tapped threads for the switch in one end.I drove the pipe into the engine case, and JB welded the thing inplace. My middle name is jerry rig,but this was too much for me to take.

If the threads come out with the switch, what would you do??? I need to take my best shot here. Is that the same repair as last time? The brass pipe and drilling ? I would like to leave this switch alone and use a second pressure port of somekind. Once again, what would you do if faced with this problem? I need suggestions . I will have to wait a day of so for these. Just not gonna do anything till the finest minds have had a few brews to think this over, anmd offer either condolences,or hope of somekind.thanks,Roger
