That, I believe, is the suggested following distance -- which is mainly a function of reaction time. A vehicle covers 1.5 feet per second per mile per hour so it's about 88 ft per second at 60mph. 6 VW lengths would give you more than a second to get on the brakes at 60 mph. Of course actual braking distance varies by vehicle and is going to have a big effect on whether you plow into that car in front of you. Geo
