Thanks for the lead, Neil and Tabe. I called and talked to the guy, and what
he says is the rebuilder (Medallion Motors?) buys a rebuilt factory case
from VW (is this possible?), and installs his own new pistons and new heads.
Supposedly it has new bearings/cam and crank/lifters. I'm going to see it
tomorrow, but in terms of "right" rebuilds, how do you know? What can you
look for? The price is sure right for a rebuilt, but not if it blows in a
month. It sure feels like the swamp water is rising...
