Greg, sorry but your wrong on this one. The filter before the pump will actually kill the pump when full of crud. It will starve the pump of fuel which is its lubrication. That's why the pumps makes that crazy buzzing sound > fuel starvation = rattling bearings = fried pump ! This is why VW issued a recall notice on all vans delivered with a before the pump filter. I put them back for added protection BUT you must be aware of the noise of your pump and change the filter before the pump burns out.
