If it's loud enough, it could be cavitation because of a restricted flow (clogged filter of blockage). I've got a similar problem with mine that I've been putting off diagnosing. I'll use a gas can to by-pass the tank to see if I've still got a blockage. The Ford Bronco/F150 pumps are slightly cheaper than the cheapest ones specifically designed for the Vanagon. I'm still trying to see if the PSI and GPH are similar. See Greg Potts' post today that addresses that issue.

Dear List,

Should I be concerned or reassured that my fuel pump is distinctly audible as it hums (actually, it's not a real him, more of a small, rapid clattering sound - I cannot find appropriate words) along constantly?

If it is the former ("concerned"), and the old one is on its way out, I'll buy a new one now!

Thanks,

Woody
