I would check the piece of rubber hose that is behind the firewall in the
engine compartment.  It is directly above the starter and can be seeping
causing your smell.  Fix it quick since it may dripping gas on top of your
starter!

This one is driving me nuts. I can smell gas when I come towards the van,
especially near the sliding door.  I've been from one end to the other
inspecting the gas lines and I've check the hoses and expansion tanks on
both sides. Everything looks dry.

Where else to look?
