Why did you touch them in the first palce? Noisy? then one or more have bleed down. Mushy while adjusting! That is beacuse they are not filled with oil or the ball check is stuck open or leaking. Proper adjustment according to the book is 2 turns after touch down. That is take up the slack, turn two more turns. This adjustment is not crtical. anything from 1/2 turn to 5 will work. That is the whole idea of hydraulic lifting. Still clatters! Let idle until engine warms up so the oil thins. Are you sure you have suffecient oil pressure? Then intermittantly rev engine to 4,000-4,500 rpm, (15-30 second spurts). Lifters should pump up and quet down. If not, you have an oil pressure problem or one or more bad lifters.
