Some things to consider: Make sure the fill tube actually fits the hole in the tank. Vanagons have two sizes of hole, depending on model year. You don't actually need to remove the fill tube from the Vanagaon body to install the tank, but the way you do it is spin it around as it comes out the fill-hole in the body. Put some of the vent hoses on *before* installing the tank. I refer mainly to the ones that come off the small metal tubes on the top of the tank. During the process of raising the tank into position, keep track of those hoses and keep feeding them through the wheel wells so they'll stay out of the way and won't get crimped. Bolt the cross-over tube to the Vanagon *before* installing the tank (I mean, duh.. <g>). Use Vaseline to help the plugs and filler tube get in the grommets. Ideally, they should all be a very tight fit. We're talking gasoline here. To get to the hoses on the driver's side, you have to have small hands. HTH. Note that this is hard-won information. :-)
