The 5 speed tranny is longer than the 4 speed. A simple comparison with a tape measure will tell them apart. Measure from the shift lever pivot to the nose mounting face with the 4 studs.

The tranny code stamped on the lower edge can help, assuming the tranny is in original condition. The case section where VW stamped the identifying codes is the same for later 4 speeds, 5 speeds, and Syncros, assuming no diff lock. This case section is often damaged internally and can get replaced during a rebuild. Then the code shows whatever the donor tranny was, not what the tranny is now.
